Ice Cream Cone History

There is much controversy about the great Ice Cream Cone. It has it that the folks of St. Louis are hopping mad, and a little embarrassed. After several decades of boasting that the ice cream cone was invented at the St Louis  fair in 1904, it turns out that a New Yorker named Italo Marchiony had a US patent on ice cream several months before the fair opened. Marchiony had been selling lemon ice cones from his pushcart since 1896 and was just issued a patent on his mold Dec. 13, 1903.

However, on a hot day the following summer at the St Louis fair, a pastry baker, named Ernest M. Hamwi rolled up some of his Zalabia pastry and sold the cones to an ice cream concessionaire who was running out of dishes.

It has been noted that there were around 50 ice cream stands at that St. Louis fair and a large number of waffle shops. Doubtless, the 1904 fair was the place where the cones became popular.

Who Invented the Popsicle?

Frank Epperson was 11 years old when he invented the popsicle by accident. One day Frank mixed some soda water powder and water, which was a popular drink in those days. He left the mixture on the back porch overnight with the stirring stick still in it. The temperatures dropped to freezing and the next day Frank had a frozen treat to show his friends. Eighteen years later, in 1923. Frank patented the treat and began a business producing Epsicles in seven fruit flavors. The name was later changed to Popsicle.

Frank later invented the Dreamsicle, Fudgesicle, Creamsicle and twin popsicle.
